Citizenship

Eligibility
Ex-Sri Lankans now holding foreign Citizenship or Sri Lankans qualified for grant of Citizenship of a foreign country, who have contributed to the socio - economic development of Sri Lanka.

Law
Provisions were introduced to the Citizenship Act No: 18 of 1948 by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act No: 45 of 1987 for the resumption/retention of Dual Citizenship of Sri Lanka by ex-Sri Lankans / Sri Lankans qualified for grant of foreign Citizenship.

Birth Registration

Eligibility
Children of Sri Lankan who born outside Sri Lanka.

Section 5 (2) of the Citizenship Act No. 18 of 1948, it’s regulations and subsequent amendments.
Section 5 (A) of the Citizenship Act No. 16 of 2003, (Amendment)

Implementation
Citizenship Division of the Ministry of Defence which operates under the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Acquisition of Dual Citizenship of Sri Lanka

 

Eligibility
Ex-Sri Lankans now holding foreign Citizenship or Sri Lankans qualified for grant of Citizenship of a foreign country, who have contributed to the socio - economic development of Sri Lanka.

Documents required
1. Birth Certificate.
2. Birth Certificate of father or the mother an Affidavit in lieu of it.
3. Citizenship Certificate of Sri Lanka, in case of Registered Citizens.
4. Marriage Certificate, if married, in case of females. / If not married Parant's Marriage Certificate.
    Note: [1-4 above originals with photocopies]
5. Bio-data page of Sri Lanka Travel Document.
6. Professional/ Academic attainments.
7. Foreign Citizenship Certificate. / Bio-data page of foreign Travel Document.
    Note: [5-7 above with Certified copies]
8. Proof of assets in Sri Lanka such as lands, investments (minimum of Rs. 2.5 million) etc., / Valuation Report and Title Report for the same.
9. Proof of Foreign Exchange remittances to Sri Lanka during the last 04 years.

Hand over application
Each applicant should forward an application to one of the addresses below with the required documents, by personally calling over/ Registered Post.

Payment Procedure

Cash payments
To be made to the Citizenship Division on any working day between 9.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.

Bank Drafts
Payments by Bank Drafts drawn in favour of the Controller of Immigration and Emigration be sent to the Citizenship Division by Registered Post.

Nominee
Any applicant may make payments through a nominee on his/her behalf. Indication of official reference is required in all correspondence.
